WELCOME TO JANSWASTHYA CHETNA SAMITI:

Janswasthya Chetna Samiti has been working on health related issues since its inception in 2000. In Saharanpur district, disadvantaged communities are faced with a lack of knowledge and access to information which leads to an increase in health and hygiene problems. These issues in turn contribute to the cycle of poverty.
One issue that Janswasthya Chetna Samiti is addressing is that of HIV-AIDS, working to counter discrimination and stigma and also strengthening community groups and providing health related services. In the past year, the team has been concentrating its efforts in 5 Gram Panchayats of Saharanpur; working with a total of 5 Youth Recreation Centres.
Janswasthya Chetna Samiti is also working on Mother and Child Health. Through the UNICEF Behaviour Change Communication programme, Janswasthya Chetna Samiti is intervening in Saharanpur district to disseminate four key messages ( hand washing practice, HIV-AIDS, and girl child education). These messages are disseminated through a network of Village Information Centres and Village Youth Volunteers.

Janswasthya Chetna Samiti believes that enabling disadvantaged communities to provide for themselves through a sustainable livelihoods approach is the key to tackling poverty in the longterm. Without access to lasting, productive crops many families have found themselves unable to generate enough income or food to support themselves, placing them at risk of financial problems if they are forced to take out loans or borrow food stocks. Often, loans are only available with excessive interest charges and even if they are able to farm families can find themselves trapped in a battle where they must choose between survival and paying back their debts. In Saharanpur, Sustainable Livelihoods are inextricably tied to farming.
Janswasthya Chetna Samiti works with farming communities through two major programmes: People's Empowerment to Access Rights for Livelihoods (PEARL) and Sustainable Livelihood Options for Rural Poor (SLORP). Through these programmes we work to educate farming communities on approaches which can improve productivity such as sustainable agricultural practices, micro-finance initiatives, vocational training, self help groups and cooperatives.
